Dancing by himself.

The marionette just stumbled on the floor, broken. No tension in its cords.

It first had parental strings attached to every limb. Some paternal strings, many maternal ones.

Yet time eroded the strings, and while he wanted to be free from them he had been tied for too long. He could not believe that he could stand alone.

And then he found her. He cut off most of his strings and went to her, strings flailing behind him.

She helped him unknot many a strings, but as she did, he, panicking on a sense of balancedness, of loss of direction and of pull, tied himself to her.

She did not like that but she thought it to be only temporary.

But when time called for her to leave she found out to be dragging him along.

And, for she loved him, she accepted the burden for a time, holding her back, dragging her down. Oh sure, many a things did he have to offer to her. Smarts, love and interesting ideas, travels and knowledge of a world so different yet same.

But the burden grew heavier and heavier, until she did not feel him to be mobile any more. From a simple burden he had become an anchor, mooring to a point, refusing to let go of the new strings he himself had tied.

And now she took a pointed hook, and cut the strings at once.

He got shocked and lost and frightened, unwilling to evolve.

Stasis is death, said "save the cat", he remembered.

She was standing over there, unwilling to be tied again, yet ready to dance.

Come, join us, the free, standing, dancing people. Lean on us from time to time if you must, yet first of all you need to stand, and stand alone. Be happy to be free.

So now the marionette stands there. Arms raised in wonder. From fear and panic he escapes to see his own freedom. Where shall he go, with whom shall he dance, he does not really know. She might be afraid of being tied down again, and he fears to tie himself again out of habit. So he stands there.

And then he takes a small step in the rhythm and starts dancing by himself. Who will join him in his dance, is still to be determined, for now the music starts:

Ah ah ah... staying alive, staying alive, ah ah ah... staying ala aaaaiiiiiiv!
